The Problem

In our fast-paced, productivity-obsessed world, many women—especially mothers and caregivers—feel disconnected. From nature. From our bodies. From who we really are.

We’ve been taught to keep pushing—through exhaustion, anxiety, overstimulation, and even trauma. But constant doing comes at a cost: nervous system dysregulation, burnout, and a loss of true presence. We forget how to just be. But, it doesn’t have to stay like this…

At Guided in Nature, I offer an alternative. A grounded, nature-based, holistic approach to therapy in Maryland that helps you come home to yourself. Nature will hold you in compassion; I will help you get back in touch with your own inner guide.

Real, Natural Answers

Nature-informed therapy—also known as nature therapy—is an evidence-based form of mental health care guided by a licensed therapist. Unlike traditional therapy, this work invites you to step outside the box—sometimes literally.

At Guided in Nature, we believe healing doesn’t have to happen within four walls.

Nature shows us that we heal and thrive in connection…

As a Maryland-based therapist, I offer flexible therapy options for women and mothers across the state:

Whether we’re walking together in the woods or you’re joining from your porch, backyard, or a quiet indoor space with natural light, nature becomes our co-therapist—supporting regulation, reflection, and reconnection.

Together, we’ll create space to slow down, build sustainable healing practices, and explore a therapeutic path that aligns with your lived experience.

Guided in Nature curates and facilitates workshops, support groups, retreats, and private therapy for those seeking greater connection to themselves, with one another, and with nature. We collaboratively craft creative coping skills, shift integenerational patterns, build a legacy of growth and resilience, and foster genuine connections that harmonize with your authentic life vision. The addition of nature in therapy is well known to enhance the therapeutic effects of your treatment. I can’t wait for you to experience the results for yourself!

Lauren Bathgate,

Are you feeling worn down by the rush of daily life — like you’re spinning on a hamster wheel you can’t get off? I’m here to help you slow down, reconnect, and find peace in the present moment.

My passion lies in guiding you back to yourself — to your values, your purpose, and your ability to flourish — alongside nature as a co-therapist and ally. Together, we’ll let nature’s healing rhythms walk with us on our journey, offering peace, renewal, and a powerful mirror to your own ability to heal.

I believe we all have a deep, innate ability to find balance and peace when we reconnect with what matters most. My role is to support you, alongside nature’s quiet wisdom, as you navigate whatever twists and turns you’re going through.

My years of experience in healthcare opened my eyes to the profound peace people find when nature enters their healing space. My office — tucked away from the bustling hospital corridors — was a sanctuary for parents whose children were hospitalized. Within this refuge, a small vase of flowers, a photo of a sunset, or a soft glow from a nearby lamp seemed to ease their stress and overwhelm. These simple elements reminded me — and those I supported — that moments of peace, renewal, and serenity are within reach, even in the hardest moments.

Whether you’re feeling stressed, disconnected, unsure, or simply ready for a change, we can let nature become a co-therapist — a gentle guide — alongside you on your path toward greater ease, authenticity, and peace.

As Featured in…

Nature-informed therapy, or nature therapy, is evidence-based mental health therapy, provided by a licensed therapist, that occurs in the natural world, or integrates nature remotely via telehealth for those who cannot or do not want to meet outside. One of the proven, tangible ways this occurs is by offering exposure to phytoncides available from greenery such as Cedar, Pine, Douglas Fir, and Spruce trees. Phytoncides are airborne chemicals that plants give off to protect against insects. Just breathing in one of these trees has the potential to increase our natural killer cells, which are key in our immune response. Isn’t that incredible?

We offer a range of therapeutic activities catered to those who are pregnant, postpartum, or caregiving, as well as to those who support them in the helping and healing professions. Featured activities include:

  • Group nature walks integrated with wellness themes such as cultivating renewal for healing professionals or flourishing in parenthood,
  • Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction sessions in natural settings,
  • Gardening (horticulture therapy) sessions,
  • Creative arts sessions using natural materials, and
  • Guided meditation and visualization

Each activity is carefully chosen to support wellbeing in transitional or challenging times. Anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, grief, ADHD, and PTSD respond favorably with nature as an added support. By blending modern research with hands-on experiences, nature-informed therapy leads the way in mental health support, recognizing the vital link between human health and nature. Our evidence-based approach ensures a transformative journey towards healing, promoting a lifestyle where balance, wellness, and environmental awareness harmonize.

  1. Built in nervous system regulation is offered by the other life forms (e.g.-plants, animals) in the surrounding area. Because we co-evolved with these other life forms, we are all the more supported by being in their presence.
  2. For those who have been in therapy for a while or who are looking for a different approach, nature can enhance therapeutic results. There are many opportunities for “real world” exposure in nature to help with matters such as distress tolerance, perspective taking, emotional regulation, and the like, that differ vastly from experiences available in other settings.
  3. Attention restoration. Reduce screen time and reconnect with our natural world. We can all benefit from decreasing overstimulation so prevalent in our modern world. If you experience fatigue and difficulty with concentration, time spent in nature can facilitate improved concentration, fatigue recovery, interest, and a sense of reflection and restoration.
  4. Fits with our evolutionary wiring to explore, interact, and be fascinated with other life forms, known as biophilia.
  5. Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight.
  6. Walk and talk sessions or sessions held in outdoor spaces may feel more comfortable. Connecting with others in nature often feels more approachable and relaxed. In walking sessions, for example, the client and therapist are generally walking side by side rather than facing one another.
  7. Physical movement helps with supporting the mind/body connection, something that has become particularly challenging in our modern society where there are so many different things vying for our attention. Nature therapy can allow for more presence of mind and body in the space where you are.
  8. Good for your senses. You may have heard of “five senses” or grounding exercises where you attend to all five senses as a means of being present. Considering just a few of our senses, nature has something to add to each:
  • Sight: The color green is right in the center of the spectrum of primary colors of visible light. This wavelength is prime for our perception and offers the least strain on our eyes. We are also hardwired to respond to certain forms of fractals, or patterns, in nature such as the fern. Exposure to these patterns can reduce stress levels up to 60%. It’s no coincidence that we experience a calming effect in nature.
  • Smell: Imagine smelling a pine tree or a campfire. Notice what it evokes for you. The sense of smell goes straight to the limbic system of our brains (a key area related to emotion and memory). That’s how powerful it is!
  • Hearing: Sounds such as water, wind, or birds activate our parasympathetic (calming) response.
  • Touch: Earthing offers an ionic exchange between us and the earth. This is partly why touching the earth with bare feet can have a profound grounding effect.
  • Taste: Nature offers an array of flavors and micronutrients to savor. There is something about eating food right from the source, such as growing your own fruits or veggies!
  1. Good for the earth. Participating in nature therapy is an additional way we can give back to the earth that sustains us. Nature is filled with reminders of the importance of reciprocity, and the vast opportunities to foster mutual sustainment.

For same cost as a typical co-pay, you will be able to experience the vibrancy of life, not only during group nature therapy sessions, but ongoing as I help you restore your connection with nature, yourself, and others. Group workshops are priced at a cost-effective $35 per person. All nature-informed group therapy is self-pay/private pay only.

While the benefits of time in nature are well supported by research, this type of therapy combined with my unique mental health expertise is innovative and highly customized. In order to have maximum flexibility to support you in achieving your goals, our practice is out of network with insurance. This allows us to focus our work together in meaningful ways that are proven effective, evidence-based, and (literally) outside-the-box. I maintain a small caseload so that I can truly be present with you each step of the way on your therapeutic path. The investment for individual therapy begins at $195 for the initial intake session, which allows us to thoroughly explore the areas where you’d like to feel more supported and begin developing a solid treatment plan to guide our work. Subsequent sessions (e.g.-weekly, bi-weekly) are $165 for 53 minutes. Self-pay/private pay are accepted for individual counseling. I can provide a superbill (receipt) so that you can seek potential reimbursement from your insurance company, if desired. I also accept Health Savings Account (HSA) payment which allows you to use your benefits toward therapy. You will also be provided with a Good Faith Estimate which will give you an approximate cost of therapy. I am more than happy to discuss options for budgeting therapy in a way that honors your finances and the value of the treatment.

Group workshops are typically held in a natural setting in Parkville, MD. Individual therapy can take place in any natural setting within Baltimore, MD. There are several potential locations that we can choose from together. For any nature-informed therapy, you can expect natural settings with uneven ground and open air environments. There is no strenuous hiking or strenuous physical activity (unless desired) and each session is designed to be as inclusive as possible. Contact us if you have any concerns prior to your session. See the liability waiver here.
