Becoming a mother is a profound transformation—a journey through the portal of matrescence that can reshape your body, mind, and spirit. It is a time of profound vulnerability, strength, and change, one that deserves to be met with safety, support, and self-trust.
Yet in a world that often over-medicalizes birth and dismisses intuitive knowledge, many women find themselves feeling disconnected, anxious, or even disempowered during their birthing experience. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
One of the most powerful ways to reconnect with your instincts is to reconnect with nature. Spending time in natural settings has been shown to reduce stress, increase confidence, and foster a sense of grounded awareness. In the same way that a forest thrives with its own rhythm and intelligence, your body carries an innate wisdom—one that deserves to be honored and trusted.
I know this firsthand. In my own journey to motherhood—navigating both a hospital birth and a planned home birth—I learned the importance of understanding my options, advocating for myself, and trusting in my body’s innate wisdom. You can hear more about my story and what I’ve learned in my conversation with Dr. Nicole Rankins on her podcast: My Story on the Birth with Power Podcast: Creating Emotional Safety in Birth.
Here are five ways to reclaim your birth experience:
- Know Your Options: Whether planning for a hospital birth, birth center, or home birth, take time to educate yourself on all your choices, from pain management methods to positions for labor. An informed mind is an empowered mind.
- Tune In to Your Body: Practice grounding techniques in nature, like walking barefoot on the earth, listening to the rustle of leaves, or practicing mindful breathing. These experiences can help you develop a deeper connection to your body’s signals and needs.
- Advocate for Yourself: Speak openly with your healthcare provider about your preferences, concerns, and birth plan. Remember, you have the right to ask questions, request alternatives, and change your mind at any time.
- Foster Emotional Safety: Surround yourself with people who respect your choices, whether that’s a supportive partner, a doula, or a trusted family member. Emotional safety is just as important as physical safety in birth.
- Embrace Nature for Confidence: Nature has a way of reminding us of our own resilience. Whether it’s watching a stream flow around obstacles or feeling the strength of an ancient tree, time spent in nature can reinforce your trust in your own inner knowing.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the choices, expectations, or uncertainties around birth, you’re not alone. Through one-on-one sessions, workshops, and nature therapy groups, I support mothers in reconnecting with their bodies, their instincts, and their voices.
Let’s work together to cultivate confidence, calm, and clarity in your birth journey—just as nature intends.
